Caulk vs. Grout: When to Use Each

Updated July 2026 ยท Port Saint Lucie & Treasure Coast

    TL;DR

Use grout between tiles on the same surface. Use caulk where two surfaces meet (wall meets floor, corner meets corner, tile meets tub). Caulk is flexible and handles movement; grout is rigid and cracks in joints. Most shower mold and water damage starts from using grout where caulk should be. Why This Mistake Causes Water Damage

Grout is rigid โ€” it doesn't flex. Where two surfaces meet, there's always slight movement from house settling, temperature changes, and moisture expansion. Rigid grout in these joints cracks over time, creating gaps that let water behind the tile. Once water gets behind tile, it causes mold, rot, and eventually tile failure.

This is the #1 cause of shower tile problems we see in Port Saint Lucie homes. Builders often grout everything (it's faster), but the joints fail within 2โ€“3 years in Florida's climate.

    Signs Your Caulk Needs Replacing

    • Peeling, cracking, or pulling away from surfaces
    • Discolored (yellow or black) caulk that won't clean
    • Visible gaps between tile and tub/floor
    • Mold growing along caulk lines despite cleaning

Our caulking service replaces old caulk with 100% silicone (not acrylic latex) that stays flexible and mold-resistant for years. We include caulk replacement in our shower restoration package. Call (772) 879-5722.
