Use grout between tiles on the same surface. Use caulk where two surfaces meet (wall meets floor, corner meets corner, tile meets tub). Caulk is flexible and handles movement; grout is rigid and cracks in joints. Most shower mold and water damage starts from using grout where caulk should be. Why This Mistake Causes Water Damage
Grout is rigid — it doesn't flex. Where two surfaces meet, there's always slight movement from house settling, temperature changes, and moisture expansion. Rigid grout in these joints cracks over time, creating gaps that let water behind the tile. Once water gets behind tile, it causes mold, rot, and eventually tile failure.
