What Is Grout Recoloring?
Grout recoloring — technically called grout color sealing — applies a pigmented, waterproof sealant to your grout lines. It's not paint (which peels). It's not stain (which fades). It's a professional-grade epoxy or acrylic-based colorant that bonds to the grout surface and creates a waterproof barrier.
The process:
- Deep clean all grout lines — The surface must be completely clean for the color seal to bond. This is why we always clean before color sealing.
- Apply color sealant — Using a precision applicator, we apply the pigmented sealant to each grout line. The color saturates into the top layer of the grout.
- Wipe excess from tile — Any sealant that gets on the tile surface is wiped clean. Only the grout retains the color.
- Cure time — 2–4 hours before light foot traffic, 24 hours before mopping.

Grout Recoloring vs. Regrouting
| Factor | Color Sealing | Regrouting |
|---|---|---|
| Cost (standard bath) | $150–$350 | $300–$800 |
| Time | 2–4 hours | 4–8 hours |
| What it fixes | Color + stain protection | Structural damage + color |
| Durability | 3–5 years | 10–15 years |
| Best for | Discolored but structurally sound grout | Cracked, crumbling, or missing grout |
When to choose color sealing: Your grout is solid (no cracks, no missing sections) but looks terrible — dark, stained, or uneven in color. Color sealing restores appearance AND adds waterproof protection.
When you need regrouting instead: Grout is cracked, crumbling, or missing. Color seal can't fix structural damage — you need regrouting first, then optionally color seal the new grout.
