Why Is My Grout Turning Black?

Black grout is almost always caused by mold and mildew growth, especially in Florida's humid climate. Grout is porous — without a sealant, it absorbs moisture, dirt, and bacteria that feed mold. Other causes include tracked-in dirt compacting into the grout lines over time, hard water mineral deposits, and cleaning products leaving residue that darkens. The fix is professional deep cleaning followed by sealing to prevent it from returning. DIY methods like bleach only treat the surface and can weaken grout over time. Why Black Grout Is Worse in Florida

Florida's climate combines three factors that accelerate grout blackening: high humidity feeds mold spores, hard water deposits minerals in pores, and the warm temperatures keep bacteria active year-round. In drier states, grout might take 5–10 years to show discoloration. In Florida, unsealed grout can turn noticeably dark in 1–2 years.

Can You Fix It Yourself?

If the discoloration is less than 6 months old and only on the surface, a baking soda paste and a grout brush might help. If the grout has been black for a year or more, the staining has penetrated deep into the pores where surface scrubbing can't reach. Professional tile and grout cleaning with hot-water extraction is the only way to pull embedded contaminants from grout pores. Follow up with color sealing to prevent it from returning.
